Roulette is one of the most popular table games in a casino and is also becoming more popular to gamblers online as well. The first step is to learning roulette is by understanding some of the most common terms used in roulette.

Balltrack – the outer rim of the wheel where the ball spins. It is also known as back-track.
Big Number – a number that hits more often than any other. It may be indicative of a biased or “lucky” number.
Biased Numbers – this refers to numbers that continue to come out in the game, caused by biased wheels.
Biased wheels – an imperfect roulette wheel causing numbers to appear often than what probability allows.
Blacks – Casino Chips valued at $100 denominations
Check rack – this refers to the tray that holds chips. Also called chip tray.
Column bet – In this bet you can bet on one of the three columns at the roulette table. If you win you will get a payout of 2 to 1.
Corner bet – Refers to the bet that you can place on the point where any four numbers intersect, as the name suggests. This bet will give you a payout of 8 to 1.
Croupier – refers to the casino employee who is in charge or operates the roulette wheel. Also spins the roulette ball
Double zero or 00 – only present in American Roulette giving the house a bigger advantage
Dozens bet – This is one of the outside roulette bets. Here, you will place your bet on sets of twelvenumbers at a time. If you win the casino will give you a payout of 2 to 1.
European roulette – This table style consist of a roulette wheel which has 37 compartments and numbers from 1 to 36 with the addition of a 0. European roulette provides a lower house edge, compared to the American roulette, so the odds of winning are greater.
Fibonacci Betting System – a Roulette betting system where there is a progressive combination of numbers
Five number bet – common play in American roulette, where players bet on 0, 00, one, two and three, all at the same time.
House Advantage or House Edge – Similar to other casino games, the house advantage refers to the advantage or odds the house or casino has over you in terms of winning/losing.
High bet – when players place best on any of these numbers – 19 to 36
Inside bets – Refers to the bets that you can place on the numbers or between the numbers present inside the Roulette layout.
Low bet – When players bet on any of these numbers 1 – 8
Martingale System – a system where the player may win at roulette by choosing to bet on one with a 50-50 chance of winning and then just continue to double the bet every time the player loses. This kind of system is quite flawed as a player may lose a lot in a short time.
Neighbors – The ‘neighboring’ numbers on the either side of the winning number at the roulette table.
Orphans – most commonly found in European casinos. Orphan is when players bet on specific number of three, which are laid out close together on the wheel, but are actually far apart on the roulette table layout. (Example 6, 3, 17)
Outside bets – Outside bets refers to the bets that you make on the outer area of the roulette table. All outside bets pay even money.
Parlay – when a player places his bet on the table and leaves it along with an added new bet, ready for the next spin.
Payout – Winnings the casino pays to a player after a win or a hit.
Pinching – Illegally removing chips from the betting table after the result has been delivered.
Reds – Casino chips valued at $5
Roulette chips – these are casino issued chips for playing roulette only and cannot be used for any other casino games in the casino. Denominations for roulette chips change depending on the player wage amount. For American roulette, there are specific sets in different colors given to each player so that their chips can be easily identifiable on the table for the dealer. For European roulette, the chips may be the same color so players have to remember.
Roulette strategy – a method any players use in order to improve chances of winning or avoid incurring huge amounts of losses.
Roulette wheel – the wheel is a movable part of the table and divided into alternate colors of black and red. The numbers on the wheel are from 1 to 36 and are not placed in number-ordered sequence.
Split bet – when a player bets on two numbers together
Straight bet – when a player bets on just one number at a time, giving him better payout if he hits
Wheel Clocking – when a player keeps track of the spin results to determine patterns, possibilities and bias.
Wheel roller – The croupier or roulette dealer that rolls or spins the roulette ball on the roulette wheel and also controls the start & stop of betting rounds
