Basic Blackjack Strategy

In order to be a successful blackjack player, you will need to learn at least some basic blackjack strategy. An easy strategy to start with is to memorize and play according to a blackjack strategy chart which simply shows you how to play your first two cards based on the dealers up card showing. For example, If your first two cards are a 9 and a 2 for a total of 11 and the dealer is showing a 5, the chart will show you to double down on 11 to maximize your blackjack win potential.

There are three basic types of hands you can get in black jack and they are hard hands, soft hands and pairs. A hard hand is two starting cards that do not contain an ace and is not paired. A soft hand is two starting cards with one card being an ace. A pair is any two cards of the same value.

Basic strategy for these three types of hands are:

Hard hands:

If you have total eight or less, always hit.

If you have Nine: Double if the dealer has 3 thru 6 – or else hit.

If you have Ten : Double if the dealer has 2 thru 9 – or else hit.

If you have Eleven: Double if the dealer has 2 thru 10, Hit if dealer has Ace.

If you have Twelve: Hit if the dealer has 2 or 3, Stand if dealer has 4 thru 6, o or else hit.

If you have 13- 16: Stand if the dealer has2 thru 6, or else hit.

If you have 17 – 21: Always Stand.

Soft hands:

If you have Ace 2 or Ace 3: Double if dealer has 5 or 6 – or else hit.

If you have Ace 4 or Ace 5: Double if dealer has 4 thru 6 – or else hit.

If you have Ace 6: Double if dealer has 3 thru 6 – or else hit.

If you have Ace 7: Stand if dealer has 2, 7 or 8. Double 3 -thru 6 – or else hit.

If you have Ace 8 or Ace 9: Always Stand.

Pairs:

If you have a pair of Aces or Eights: Always split.

If you have a pair of twos or threes: Split if dealer has 2 – 7, or else hit.

If you have a pair of fours: Split if dealer has 5 or 6 – or else hit.

If you have a pair of fives: Double if dealer has 2 thru 9 – or else hit.

If you have a pair of sixes: Split if dealer has 2 thru 6 – or else hit.

If you have a pair of sevens: Split 2 thru 7 – or else hit.

If you have a pair of nines: Split 2 thru 6, and 8 or 9. Stand if dealer has 7, 10 or Ace.

If you have a pair of tens: Always Stand.
